Tattoo Aftercare

The way your tattoo looks when you leave the shop is how it should appear once fully healed—as long as you follow proper aftercare instructions. Infections don’t happen during the tattooing process; they usually result from improper care after you leave the shop. It’s completely normal for your tattoo to go through phases of scabbing, itching, peeling, and tightness. In fact, your tattoo may look a bit rough before it starts to look its best as it heals. Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure your tattoo heals as beautifully as it looked on day one.

  • Clean Your Tattoo 2-3 Times a Day
For the first few days, it’s crucial to keep your tattoo clean to prevent infection. Wash the tattoo gently 2-3 times a day using lukewarm water and anti-bacterial soap. Use your clean hands (not a washcloth or sponge) to gently clean the area. Avoid scrubbing or applying too much pressure to prevent irritation.
  • Pat the Area Dry with a Clean Towel
After washing, pat the tattoo dry using a clean, soft towel or paper towel. Never rub the area, as this can cause irritation or damage the healing skin. Always make sure the towel is fresh and free of any bacteria, as your tattoo is most vulnerable during this stage.
  • Apply a Tattoo-Specific Cream or Ointment 2-3 Times a Day
Once the area is dry, apply a tattoo-specific cream or an ointment recommended by your tattoo artist (such as Aquaphor or A+D Ointment). Use a very thin layer—enough to moisturize but not to suffocate the tattoo. Do not over-saturate the skin with too much cream, as this can trap moisture and cause issues like clogged pores or infection, which can prolong healing.
  • Avoid Plastic Wrap or Band-Aids
Once your tattoo is exposed to air, do not re-cover it with plastic wrap or Band-Aids. Covering the tattoo after initial removal of the protective film can trap moisture and bacteria, preventing the area from breathing and healing properly. Allowing your tattoo to breathe is an essential part of the healing process.
  • Resist the Urge to Pick or Scratch Your Tattoo
As your tattoo heals, you might experience itching or peeling, which is a normal part of the process. Do not pick or scratch the scabs or peeling skin. This can damage the tattoo, remove ink, and increase the risk of scarring or infection. If itching becomes bothersome, gently tap the area or apply more aftercare lotion.
  • Switch to an Unscented Lotion After 4-5 Days
After the first 4-5 days, when your tattoo begins to peel and the initial healing process is underway, you can switch from using ointments to an unscented lotion (like Lubriderm or CeraVe). This will keep the area moisturized without being too heavy. Avoid lotions with fragrances, as they can irritate your healing skin.
