Body Piercing Aftercare
Our piercers at Southernmost Tattoo emphasize that the aftercare process for most piercings is generally similar, regardless of the location. The key to proper healing is consistency and cleanliness. “Most piercing professionals agree that the best aftercare involves twice-daily saline soaks to gently remove any debris that may build up, followed by patting the area dry with a clean paper towel,” says T.J., our full-time piercer. Beyond that, the golden rule is to leave the piercing alone and avoid unnecessary touching to reduce the risk of irritation or infection.
In addition to saline soaks, we recommend a few more essential aftercare tips. For the first few weeks, keep your hair up and away from the piercing to prevent any snagging or contamination. Avoid swimming for at least 30 days to minimize the risk of infection from bacteria in water. If your new piercing is in an area that’s difficult to avoid pressure—like your ear or nose—try not to sleep on it. If that’s hard to do, a simple trick is to use a travel pillow to alleviate discomfort while protecting the area.
Lastly, it’s important to avoid wearing face makeup for a couple of weeks if the piercing is on your face, as makeup can clog pores and cause irritation or bumps. And always remember: wash your hands before touching your piercing. As a general rule, leave the earrings or jewelry in for at least six weeks to ensure the piercing doesn’t close prematurely.
At Southernmost Tattoo, we prioritize your safety and healing. Always follow professional advice and never hesitate to reach out with questions about your new piercing!
